"Public Citizen highlighted auto safety standards they urge the House to pass"

March 18, 2004

The Public Citizen consumer group submitted written testimony to the U.S. House Commerce and Science and Transportation Committee at the hearing on reauthorization legislation for the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). Every year, the leading cause of death for Americans between the ages of 2 and 33 are from vehicle crashes and Joan Claybrook, who was formerly the administrator of the NHTSA, on behalf of the Public Citizen addressed the need for SUV rollover prevention and survival, vehicle compatibility in crashes, safeguards for 15-passenger vans, and child safety in and around vehicles.

Claybrook believes the auto safety problems are well known but changes through technology and engineering must be implemented, especially since the capabilities to make changes are present. In 2000, Congress enacted legislation to improve tire safety standards, a move that came shortly after the Bridgestone Firestone SUV rollover deaths, but Public Citizen thinks that was just a start to long-overdue safety changes

No lawyer can tell you at the beginning of your claim how much your case is worth until he or she has all the medical records, bills and wage loss analysis in hand. However, by calling 800-437-2571 anytime and explaining the specific circumstances of your accident and injuries, one of our experienced personal injury attorneys, may be able to give you a “ball park figure,” or if you prefer, may also use our convenient Free Case Evaluation submission form.
