Bicycle Accidents

In the United States, a bicyclist is fatally injured every 6 hours and nearly one million children are injured every year in bicycle related accidents. While collisions with automobiles only account for 1/3 of the accidents, they account for the majority of the catastrophic injuries, 75% of which are head injuries.

A variety of bike-car collisions occur on our roadways. Common types include:

Motorist Entering Roadway. In this situation, the motorist enters the roadway from a driveway or a parking slot and fails to see the cyclist until it=s too late.

Motorist Fails to Yield. A motorist can fail to yield to a cyclist at an intersection by totally running a stop sign or traffic light, or by fully stopping but then failing to look both ways before resuming travel. When a motorist fails to yield to a cyclist, the consequences to the cyclist can be grave.

Motorist Turning. When a motorist turns left or right directly in front of a cyclist, the cyclist is literally cut off by the car. Depending on speed, the cyclist can suffer serious, and even fatal, injuries.

Motorist Passing Cyclist. Many times, motorists strike cyclists because they fail to see the cyclist until it=s too late. Cyclists can also be struck when the motorist, while passing the cyclist, swerves in an effort to avoiding hitting something else.

In addition to these accident types, alcohol can also play a role in bicycle crashes. In 2000, alcohol was involved in about 30 percent of all reported bike-car crashes.
