Should You Talk to the Insurance Company

After an auto accident, should I talk to an insurance company adjustor?

Depending on the circumstances, you may be required to contact your insurance company when an accident has occurred. However, if you have already hired an attorney, your attorney can speak with your insurance company concerning your accident.

This does not mean that you should avoid speaking to all adjusters in every case. If your injuries are not severe or that the total insurance coverage available is minimal, and no other coverage is available, you may wish to talk to the adjuster to conclude the matter quickly. This could also work to your advantage if the police report clearly places fault on the other driver.

If you have been contacted by the insurance company of the at fault driver, they will want information from you concerning how the accident happened and if anyone was injured in the accident. If you sustained injuries, let the adjuster know that you were injured and that you are receiving treatment or are scheduled to see your doctor. Provide them with the name and contact information of anyone else in your car who may have been injured in the accident.

If your injuries result in ongoing treatment, you should keep the insurance company informed of your treatment. Keep track of all your expenses. The insurance company does not have to pay your medical bills, however, the amount of your medical bills are part of your damages and important when determining the value of your claim.

We recommend that, if the injuries sustained in an auto accident are severe or catastrophic, it is best to retain an attorney who is experienced in handling auto accident cases. Often times serious injuries could have a long term affect on the accident victim's physical and financial well being.
